Readwise Reader is an app for reading and triage: articles, newsletters, PDFs, EPUBs, YouTube videos, highlights, notes, Ghostreader and library search. Readine is about something else: it monitors sources, pulls in the full text with images on its own, and exports files to the cloud or to Obsidian. Readwise is drifting towards academic work with sources and quotes; Readine is about the flow of articles.
Readwise Reader is an app for reading and triage. Articles, newsletters, PDFs, EPUBs, YouTube videos with a transcript and Twitter threads are saved into it by hand. Text can be highlighted and exported together with metadata.
Readine works through your subscriptions: you add a source once, and after that Readine keeps an eye on it for you. The full text with images arrives automatically. You can jot short notes on the text, but that is not what it is mainly for. You can also set up automatic copying of articles as files to a disk or to Obsidian. You can already process these files with any tool of yours.
| Feature | Readwise Reader | Readine |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | saving and triaging one document | reading the flow of sources |
| Full text | manually, via a browser extension | automatically, with no manual steps |
| Auto-export | highlights and notes | the full text of an article |
| PDF and EPUB | supported | not supported |
In Readine you can set up rules for what to do with a new article. You build a condition on a word in the full text, the title, the URL or a tag, and pick the action from a list — delete, mark as read, add to favourites, send a push notification or an email. Set up automatic deletion of the unnecessary, and read what you need.
You can mark or unmark a single article as read, and there are bulk actions for a list of articles.
Notifications are grouped to reduce the noise: pushes are batched over a window of 1 minute to 1 day, emails over 3 hours to 1 day. You can receive a daily email with links to new articles.
Readwise keeps highlights in the text, document metadata, notes beside them, the Ghostreader AI assistant, PDF and EPUB reading, quotes from Kindle, Kobo and Apple Books, and a daily review of quotes. Readine does not handle any of that and does not try: it is about the flow of articles.
Readine does have notes and tags, and they export to Obsidian via a separate plugin.
Readwise triages what you have already found: you read it in full, highlight it, write a note, come back to a quote. Readine brings you what you have not seen yet, and does not make you save every article by hand.
Q: Does Readine replace Readwise Reader?
A: No. Readwise triages individual documents. Readine monitors sources and brings new articles.
Q: What can Readine do that Readwise cannot?
A: Auto-export. The file goes straight to Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive or Yandex Disk, or into Obsidian. Readine also handles Telegram, private channels included, and paid sites — Substack, Boosty, Fanbox, Patreon and Sponsr — with no email forwarding and no browser extension.
Q: What stays in Readwise?
A: Highlights in the text, notes next to them, Ghostreader, PDF and EPUB, quotes from e-readers and a daily review. Readine has notes and tags, but no in-text highlights.
Q: Do I get the full article?
A: Yes. The full article arrives, with images, right in the app, on every plan, and the offline copy stays even after the author deletes the article.
