How to stop scrolling endlessly — a feed that ends

Infinite scroll is designed never to end: the next article loads before you have finished the current one. In Readine the feed ends: nothing loads after the last article, and the unread count can be hidden so that it does not keep nudging you on.

Why it happens

The endless feed is built on purpose

You open it for a minute and close it an hour later, and it is hard to remember what you read. Loading works so that while you read one article, the next one is already ready.

Social networks and recommendation feeds monetise time in the app, so there is no point at which you have had enough. The display order there is set by an algorithm. An article by an author you subscribed to may not appear, because the service decided it is boring and you may close the app over it.

Readine is designed differently.

Settings

What changes in Readine after two settings

There are two sorting modes: “newest first” and “oldest first”. With “oldest first” sorting you carry on where you left off and get to the end. When you get there, you see that there are no new articles, and you can close the app.

The unread count can be hidden in the settings.

Unread articles are not marked as read on a timer, so you can return to them even a month later. You set auto-deletion yourself, and usually it is there to keep the app fast.

You can mark or unmark a single article as read, and there are separate bulk actions.

Set a rule to clear out what you do not need — matching a word in the article body or in a tag. Choose the action: delete, mark as read, add a new tag. The rule applies only to new articles.

Clearing the backlog

What to do with the backlog

If you have built up a big backlog of unread articles, you do not have to go through them one at a time.

First filter out what is definitely unneeded — by tag, by a single feed or by time (new / recent / archive). You can also select through search, but it is easier to slip up there, so we do not recommend it.

Then press “Mark as read”.

FAQ
Common doubts

Questions about a finite feed

Q: Won’t it get boring without recommendations?

A: Only what you subscribed to ends up in the feed. You determine the set of sources yourself, and you can add a new one with a link.

Q: What if I have not opened the app for a couple of months?

A: With “oldest first” sorting you carry on where you left off.

Q: Can I mark a whole list as read?

A: Yes, you can mark a whole list as read; there is a separate action for it.

Q: Are there “you might like” recommendations?

A: No. Only you determine the list of sources, and the order follows publication date.

Try reading in order.

3 feeds are free, with no time limit and no ads. Switch on “oldest first” and see where the feed ends.
